I was in the middle of playing when my system crashed and when I logged in again my character was gone

the same thing happened to me. Level 75 character gone; Gold gone; Items gone. I’m sad. 
In 0.7.7, we switched our saving method and it had some unfortunate interactions with system crashes. We are sorry that this is happening and we have a new solution that is in late stage testing right now. For the time being, if you are experiencing frequent crashes, I would advise keeping a manual backup. If you need help doing this, let me know.
Lost everything too.
If you cant make it work online 100% save, leave it offline…
There is no indication that you can even have “Local Saves” at all - no warning nothing.
Waste of 25 hours…
