Impressions After 100 Hours of Play

Good luck with that. GD runs on far weaker machines, is fully featured has working multiplayer, and has mod support which is also supported in multiplayer.

people dont buy GD to play a game similar to PoE. if EHG want to chase PoE, id be better off just playing PoE since it runs better and at the cost of LE i would have bought all the important stash tabs (which i have).

Ill repeat it as many times as i need to. Games that cost up front should never have micros end of story.

How can you possibly think you know that much about the game and classes after 100 hours. I’ve played ONE spec (but different variants) 1-60 about 7 times. 5-6 hardcore deaths with resets and a lvl 90 softcore. I am still learning things about the spec and the pros and cons of different choices and gear changes. I agree with a few of your points but honestly I stopped reading when you acted like a single example of a game i’ve never even heard of (slime rancher) proves that having cosmetic mtx is a bad idea. The most popular game in the world uses cosmetic mtx (League of Legends) which I stopped playing for reasons other than mtx. The only thing most gamers have an issue with is pay to win. By the way 3 million copies of a game in a global market is not impressive. Steam doesn’t even change their sales cut until $50 million in sales. Games cost alot of money to make and alot to continually develop after release (in order to create seasonal content or expansions or w/e) Many people are willing to pay cosmetic mtx just because they know the game will get more development funding. I paid for this game in alpha because I loved the concept. The download was a zip file lol. By the way nobody cares if you repeat yourself a million times, up front you are paying for the game. They could simply not make the cosmetic additions and not have mtx and that would please you for some reason? that makes no sense you don’t have to buy them.

oh look another “its just cosmetics” apologist. PoE having micros is acceptable because its F2P. anyone who uses a F2P model while taking an entrance fee is double dipping.

i have never found it acceptable and it will never be in my opinion. if it has an up front cost there should be no micros. want micros? it should be free to play.

Which is entirely your prerogative, what’s not acceptable is calling someone who disagrees with you names.

I understand your concerns about the game but I don’t really agree with the argument that this game lacks replayability or future complexity. Maybe I am bias because I enjoy ARPGs and I been here for a while. I have thousands of hours under my belt playing Last Epoch. It’s one of those games for me that is really easy to pick up again, try something completely new, and play long hours. I keep constantly theorycrafting trying out different node/gear combinations which keeps me coming back each content patch. I found this game to have massive complexity that at first glance I think new players really miss (need to play and experience more classes and skills) and the best part is, it’s not even the finish product yet. Also I would love to add that the developers of LE are extremely passionate and I am always blown away at the amount of changes they make and interesting things they design. I keep being pleasantly surprised over and over again. I personally feel like the developers have set up a great system to continue to push complexity in the directions they want to in the future with idol system and even adding more nodes into the trees for the future. Just adding a node for example to convert some physical damage xyz could completely change versatility of a skill, open up many unique combos and synergy with other skills. That foundation is fantastic! I really don’t understand players saying that the game in the future has to worry about becoming static; I really don’t see it.

That being said the only thing I have concerns about is not the skills/nodes/skill combinations, it is the future of the mastery tree system. I feel like that could be the only part of the game where I feel could become very lackluster and static as time goes on. Yeah I could see them adding more masteries but the trees themselves lack potential to grow outside of that; which could possibility become boring. I feel like a skill tree system opening up more to being like a PoE (open design where classes nodes can link and have synergy depending on their location) /Wolen tree (possibility of creating more synergy with nodes depending on how you choose to flip or move the mastery wheel) where different masteries could link or have weird node synergies later on would be better and more interesting for the future. It would also allow for future growth and expansions. Right now the trees are limited in the sense that they are boxed in and unless you make the nodes super small you will get to the point where maybe you want to expand and there wouldn’t be an option unless you completely rework the design. Maybe in the future this is something they could think about, right now with balancing and working on a solid foundation is the most important thing though.

When it comes to price and MTX I could care less about spending 30$~ on Last Epoch because I look at it this way: normally every month I would buy a game or two for 40$-60$ and play it for around 20~ hours or so and next month do the same. I have played last epoch for over 2k+ hours, the money I have invested into this game with how much replayability it given me well surpassed any game I have ever played and paid for itself x times over. I would say it’s probably one of the best game investments I made for the time I have played it. If they also stay true to only providing MTX cosmetics and not any P2W things I would easily spend the 40-60$ I would normally spend every month on looking fly as hell IG verse spending on another game release. I think players go way too much into this money rabbit hole on what the developers need to do price their game; it’s little cringe. Because all that happens is players throwing around arbitrary numbers on what they think is the actual cost to run a game/server/people/future development/events etc which could easily be so far far from the truth. At the end of the day its never going your choice what the price of LE is, LE set up a system that works with them with their budget, you either respect that or don’t pay to play. Either way with how expensive games are, from my personal opinion, I think the price is reasonable as hell.

You don’t know anything about the pricing of MTX in LE, yet. PoE is free to play and has very expensive MTX. Also they gate QoL features behing a fee (stash tabs).

Let’s talk again, when we know the pricing. Then you can asume if box price + 5 MTX items in LE is more expensive than 5 MTX items (without a box price) in PoE.

PoE makes you think that is acceptable to have expensive MTX because they let you play for free. With that attitude in mind you might pay more money during a year than you’d have planned. That’s marketing.

In the end for me LE will save me money. I won’t have the time to play other games, so I won’t pay for them.

Also you sound surprised by the pricing model. That’s wierd, because box price + MTX store without p2w was announced forever. Nothing changed besides the box price.

Compare LE to other recently released Games like

  • Wolcen: 34,99 €
  • Warhammer Chaosbane: 49,99 € (+68,89 € for DLCs, XP/Gold Boosters, MTX)
  • Torchlight 3: 33,99 €
  • Warhammer: Inquisitor Martyr: 49,99 € + MTX
  • Titan Quest 19,99 € (34,98 € for complete bundle - 14 year old game!!!)
  • Grim Dawn: 24,99 € (+66,45 € for all DLCs)
  • Borlderlands 3: 59,99 € (+ up to 219,84 € MTX stuff)

I could go on endlessly with examples of games with box prices the also have MTX / DLC stuff. All this stuff is optional. But some things like content DLCs are kind mandatory if you wanna keep playing.

In LE you will get content updates FOR FREE! Just because there are people who buy that MTX stuff. So you will be provided free additional content if you refuse to use cosmetic MTX.

I can’t see any flaw within this model. Contentwise the LE box price is absolutely justified if you look at games like Wolcen, Torchlight and Warhammer that only have a glimpse of the content and replayability of LE in its current beta state. LE has more diverse enemies and tilesets than these 3 games all toghether.

Absolutely! LE is the game in my steam library I’ve played the most hours ever…

For what it’s worth, this is what I was promised back in Kickstarter (Oracle $75):

  • Oracle Forum Title
  • Digital Copy of Last Epoch at Release
  • 750 Cosmetic Points ($75 Value)
  • Exclusive Kickstarter Backer In-Game Pet Winged Sylpine
  • Last Epoch Soundtrack by Rob Benson
  • Exclusive In-Game Character Portrait Tier 2
  • Beta Test Access
  • Alpha Test Access
  • Constellation Weapons

To me, this makes it seem like it is/was intended to be comparable to a free game with MTX ala PoE. We have no idea what each cosmetic point buys you at this juncture so it’s really impossible to compare.

no im not surprised. as i said. it is unacceptable for any game with an upfront cost to have micros. this includes borderlands though i paid 7$ for the handsome bundle which includes BL2 and Presequel and all their DLC.

im not against paying for expansions (content DLC) i have Grim dawn and all its DLC. i payed less for all the important stash tabs in PoE than i did for LE. at that point if PoE had a box price i basically bought the game.

it sounds like you are confusing me with also disliking content DLC which is incorrect. i fully support the selling of expansions (ones that arent cut content).

and yes i am more lenient on free to play games because? no box price. i avoided chaos bane simply because of its cash shop just like i avoided anthem, and marvels avengers.

LE was a special case for me since i was looking for a good ARPG and the choices were chaos bane, warhammer martyr, and some other indie ones.

dont know why you listed titan quest. i own it but that game has over 1k people still playing it. it also runs very well and has working multiplayer which like its successor also supports mods and was remastered.

That sounds very narrow minded

Don’t get me wrong, i respect your opinion, but there are certainly alot of possible scenarios where a MTX Store is not outrageous while having a b2p game.

We don’t know anything about LE’s MTX yet, possible there will be even cosmetics earnable via in-game means, we just don’t know anything yet.

The developing of games did not get cheaper over the years, especailly with the rising exceptations of playerbases.

I am sure EHG could have gone for a even higher b2p price, but that would also act as a higher threshold for new players to come in, especially for a more Inide Title, like LE.

I think EHG did show more than just a few times, that they really care about their game and their community, so let’s at least give them a chance. I am most certain that the MTX Store will not be outrageous.

I disagree, if DesireDemon doesn’t think it’s acceptable for a paid game to have MTX, that’s entirely his opinion & you don’t get to call him narrow minded. Whether MTX are “good” or “bad” is (usually) a subjective thing. You have the free cash to get the creator pack so you think that’s a good thing, I don’t but I wouldn’t have a go at you for spending your own cash on something you want. Nor can you have a go at me (or DesireDemon) for either being unable or unwilling to do the same.

If he/she/whatever doesn’t like MTX in paid game, that’s his prerogative & we don’t get to call him on it, especially when he’s not ramming it down our throat (like some other people have in the past with their opinions). He’s not stating it as fact and he’s given some reasons.

Ok my word choice, was probably not the best i admit.

But his wording was very…objective. Like it sounds like “his can’t be a thing at all under no circumstances”

I just wanted to connect that with my other statments about video games generally become more complex and expensive to develop to statisfy enough players.

So now the discussion should be should devs raise upfront prices? add ads to their video games? add mtx? add subscription?

But well, that get’s way off-topic and if some1 is really interested in discussion this, i happily join any new thread on that topic.

Just wanna throw in my 2 cents on games pricing. Im not gonna argue whats right or wrong when it comes to charging prices, as everyone ofc has their own opinions, but heres mine…

I never compare games when it comes to their prices, if i should do that i would be outraged that WoW had cost me something like 1000$ and D2 was something like 20-40$(dont remember excactly), and they both kept me entertained for around 5 years each.

Instead i try to look at the quality of the entertainment, and the time it keeps me entertained, and if a game can keep me hooked for 150+ hours a month i will have absolutely no problem paying something in the lines of 30-50$ every month for that. No other paid entertainment in the world can give me so many hours of fun for that price.

And so far LE has given me 1000 hours of fun for the price of 40$…It will take me less than 2 hours to burn that amount of money down at the local Pub.
So if we are to pay a few extra bucks for some mtx later on to keep a great game going im all in for that.

Maybe i have an old school mind for looking at it like that, but…i AM old haha

You didn’t respond to my point you can just not buy any mtx and buy the game. How is that different from them not having mtx available for those who want to support them further? I won’t hold my breathe for an answer because there isn’t a difference. If anything it’s even better for the person who doesn’t buy mtx because they will get more content funded by those who do for free (beyond what they originally paid for).

lol, GGG and PoE are literal light years ahead of every other RPG that exists - these companies know they cannot compete so they make a ‘slower paced’ RPG because they simply cant do what GGG does and offer such fast paced gameplay - amazing currency system, interacting with maps, boxes and many many things other aRPGS haven’t even though of

PoE has a shit payment model though, after playing for years I have everything I need to play and thus do not need to make anymore grudge purchases to a company that doesn’t need anything from a long term player

Grim Dawn/D3 were the best payment models are you paid ONE time fee and had access to everything without needing to keep shelling out more money

Not much else to say really on the subject that hasn’t already been said 1000 times

Grim Dawn exists. A game that has no MTX. you can give continued support through positive reviews and telling your friends about it or gifting it to your friends, and buying expansions.

No Man’s sky exist. A game that has no MTX and has been doling out expansions like its nothing. though the case can be made that they get funding from sony still they are indie.

plenty of games are successfull without MTX. throwing money into a hole in the name of “Continued Support” and acting like games with no MTX are unsuccessful is not my way when i know that isnt true in the slightest.

I tried telling the bank that instead of paying the mortgage this month I’d tell all my friends who nice they are and how everyone should bank with them but for some reason they weren’t ok with that and wanted actual money

If they’re getting money from a publisher they aren’t indie (which means independent), and no publisher is going to keep bankrolling an “independent” studio after the game has come out (royalties being an entirely separate thing).

The only support they got from Sony was for promotion and publication (not development).

and yet Crate Entertainment was and still is successful with Grim Dawn.

Lariat Studios and Divinity original Sin? no MTX and very successful. they also gave everyone who owned the original game the definitive edition.

dude how many times do we have to point out you dont have to buy any cosmetics. Game development isn’t free regardless of examples of games that might have found other funding. You don’t have to throw money in a hole, you only have to pay the upfront cost. You are cherry picking and its sad. I paid 40 dollars or something in alpha and I already feel like I got my moneys worth after 350 hours, the game isn’t even released yet.

I looked up just ONE of the games you suggested.
Buy Grim Dawn CDN$ 27.99

CONTENT FOR THIS:
CDN$ 6.49
Grim Dawn - Crucible Mode DLC
CDN$ 9.99
Grim Dawn - Steam Loyalist Items Pack
CDN$ 20.49
Grim Dawn - Ashes of Malmouth Expansion
CDN$ 18.49
Grim Dawn - Forgotten Gods Expansion
CDN$ 10.29

You are wrong. How is this more reasonable than optional mtx?
Total is roughly $110
I also follow a bunch of ARPG players and Ive never heard of grim dawn while all of them are talking about LE.

The “loyalist items pack” is basically a bundled mtx. Please stop your non sensical rant now.

The Grim Dawn Definitive Edition includes:

  • Grim Dawn

  • Grim Dawn: Ashes of Malmouth

  • Grim Dawn: Forgotten Gods

  • Grim Dawn: Crucible

$55.27. move along.

Edit: also no ingame cash shop.
