I haven’t played LE in a while, for more than I month I reckon. I logged in today to find I’m back to the create a new character screen instead of my list of characters. Was there a character wipe or something, or is it a some sort of bug?
There was no wipe. 
did you change computer or uninstalled the game ? The characters saves are currently stored locally on your computer
