These things look like you’re meant to be able to click them to choose which quests to track. Clicking them makes your character walk in that direction. They seem pointless otherwise, so may as well remove them.
When you complete them the boxes get a tick in them. Though they are superfluous.
I will agree that they look a bit confusing when a given quest only has a single objective at a time. But Llama is correct-- a checkmark is placed there when an objective is completed, which is quite helpful when the quest has multiple objectives.
I believe the reason the boxes are there when a quest only has one objective is to maintain visual consistency and spacing.
